![]() What really takes The Deep from “edgelord but interesting” to “Bye Felicia” is the ending. That is not how I like to spend my time, but again I can tolerate that sort of thing if it helps the story. ![]() ![]() I was walking around a lake as I listened to it on Audible and I had to stop walking and deep breathe because I thought I was going to throw up. (Fuck Eli Roth.) (Just because you’re showing more horrible things on screen than your peers are doesn’t make you special or an artiste, dude, it makes you an attention seeker who needs therapy.)) The Deep has one of the most disturbing death descriptions (not the dog) I’ve ever read. I have a pretty high tolerance for gore and horrible things happening to people, though I draw the line at like, the insane collection of straight to DVD Hellraiser movies, or anything made by Eli Roth, because if I’m going to put horrible things in my head that will haunt me when I fall asleep or am alone in a cold dark house, it had better be worthwhile at least (Eli Roth never is. I love horror stories, it’s definitely my favorite genre. I kept reading, hoping the story payoff would be worth it. I checked online to see if the dog died as soon as I read there was a dog, because that’s just something you need to check for with horror stories. ![]()

So, in short: revenge.Īnd, because writing about gay people seemed prohibitive, I let myself include every strange, indulgent idea I had. I started Reverie in high school, as a response to the startling absence of queer people in nearly all pop culture and books available to me at the time. Reverie is Ryan’s debut novel and he recently agreed to talk about it with Daryl Maxwell for the LAPL Blog. He technically lives in New York City, but has actually transcended material reality and only takes up a human shell for special occasions, like brunch, and to watch anime (which is banned on the astral plane). There’s a famous scene near the end of the original 1956 “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” where a frantic lead character is in the roadway, running among the cars trying to alert people to the danger. Add to that their relentless, insidious barrage of laws pushing medical quackery to redefine when human life actually begins, and incitement of wannabe heroes who violently target Planned Parenthoods and independent clinics, and you’ll see - the alien pod people have nothing over our homegrown ones. ![]() ![]() The laws they have enacted have left 87 percent of the counties in this country without an abortion provider, and make access to reproductive services hopelessly difficult. These political pod people have coordinated a full “body snatching” assault, passing hundreds of burdensome laws designed to take bodily autonomy away from the people they are supposed to represent. It’s scary enough in fiction, but even in 2015, modern day “body snatchers” in state legislatures and Congress are trying to take over women's bodies and insinuate themselves into our most personal decision making.
